Who are you, and what ties you to our community?

My wife and I moved to New Hampshire 36 years ago so she could attend graduate school here. We stayed because we fell in love with the state — the natural beauty, the welcoming community, the opportunity to build a good life for ourselves. We bought our first home in Goffstown, and I started my video production company here. We moved to our next home in Weare 21 years ago.

Community service has always been important to me — I think being a citizen of a town means you give back to it. I have served on a number of non-profit boards and town commissions. New Hampshire has a reputation of being independent-minded but also has a long history of its people working together to help each other too.

Why are you running for State Representative right now?

I’m running because I believe we can do better than what our current legislature is offering us.

The Free State Project has had a tremendous impact on New Hampshire. Their agenda is driving much of the policy in Concord.

As a result, our state representatives are not addressing the issues that matter to the people of Goffstown. They are pushing an agenda that is hurting us now and will cause enormous problems for us as a state down the road — look at what they are doing to public education and local control. Their agenda has nothing to do with what the people of the state actually want. It’s past time to bring back a state government that is respectful, reasonable and actually representative of its citizens. I want to be part of that effort.

What are the top 2–3 issues facing our district?

Affordability: Every year our property taxes go up. The average family is struggling to make ends meet — never mind saving for the future, buying a home, or affording healthcare. The state is not contributing enough to support public schools. Local taxpayers are being asked to make up the difference. It’s not fair that the state is cutting taxes to wealthy corporations while our elderly are having trouble staying in their homes.

Civility in Government: We have many issues to address. We won’t get that done if we can’t work together and have respectful conversations. Name-calling, lying and bullying should not be tolerated in our legislature. New Hampshire used to be a place where people of all political stripes could work together to get things done. I want to help bring that back.

Local Control: Our representatives are trying to pass laws that take away the power of towns to decide what’s best for their communities. That’s not the New Hampshire way.

How would you address these issues?

Affordability: There is no one simple answer. It is all about choices. Our representatives have cut business taxes that have starved the state of a billion dollars in revenue. Local taxpayers now have to make up the difference. You see this in your rising property taxes. You see this in the services being cut. Our old town hall in Weare is no longer open for the public. It’s hard to hire help for town services because we can’t offer competitive wages. This is all because the state isn’t sending enough money to the towns. I would make choices that benefit the average person in NH — not large companies from out of state or just the wealthy.

Education: This is another choice. Our representatives have pushed through Education Freedom Accounts (EFAs) without a funding source — or any accountability. EFAs are paid for from the education fund. That means less money for public schools. Roughly 90% of the people receiving money from the EFA program were already sending their children to private schools or homeschooling. I would not support a program that supports the wealthy at the expense of the average taxpayer.

Local Control: I will fight to maintain local control in Goffstown and Weare. A perfect example of this is the school funding cap our representatives tried to pass. This issue was rejected at town meeting by the voters in Goffstown and Weare. Again and again, our representatives choose to ignore the voice of the people.

Citizens know what’s best for their communities. I will fight to maintain local control and reject any attempts to override votes in our towns.

How will you represent all constituents—including those who may disagree with you?

By returning to the way New Hampshire used to be governed: sitting down together to find a solution that serves the common good. This may sound naĂŻve, but history shows us it can be done. This has always been the real New Hampshire advantage.

I am organizing events where all voters — independent, republican, democrat — can come and share their ideas and concerns. I have had good conversations with lots of different people. AND I will keep those conversations in mind as I work in Concord to represent Goffstown and Weare.

What values guide your decision-making?

“Will this help the average person in Goffstown and Weare?” will be my guiding principle. I believe we would all be better off if our representatives were more focused on the people of NH instead of out-of-state operatives and their self-serving agendas.

What else would you like voters to know about you?

I’m just a regular guy — recently retired from running my own successful business for 28 years. I’ve been married to the same woman for 36 years. I cherish the natural beauty of this state. Now I have time to give back to the state where my family and I have thrived: I want to do my part to be part of the solution that makes NH a better place for everyone. We can do better, because we are better and we deserve better.

Vote for All 6

Goffstown elects four (4) representatives, plus another two (2) "floterial" representatives that we share with Weare. Remember to vote for all 6 Democrats—leaving a blank is an advantage for our opposition.
