One of the most powerful forms of political outreach is still word of mouth. People trust recommendations from family members, friends, neighbors, and coworkers far more than political ads.

This means you have a big opportunity to influence the people in your life who trust you!

Conversations with people you know are the most powerful form of persuasion and mobilization, whether it’s your:

  • Neighbors

  • Church group

  • Hiking group

  • Gardening club

  • Veterans’ network

  • Caregiving forum

  • Parenting chat

But what do you say?

Don't worry—it doesn't have to be awkward. Just talk to your family and friends like you usually do, and keep these four steps in mind:

  1. Share about what’s important to you.

  2. Explain why (include personal stories or connections as much as possible).

  3. Share that you’re supporting these candidates.

  4. Ask for their vote.

Talk-to-your-friends template

When you pull it together, it looks like this:

Hi [Name],

I’m pretty concerned about [X]. [Reason why]. I’m planning to vote for this group of local candidates this year because [Y].

I’m hoping you’ll support them, too. Please vote on November 3.

Example message 1

Hi Jen,

You probably know that I’m pretty concerned about public education. Jack and Holly deserve the best shot we can give them. But right now, our public schools are struggling, while our famlies all struggle to pay for them. NH ranks dead last nationally in state funding for education, and that forces Goffstown residents to pick up more and more of the tab through property taxes.

I’m voting for this group of local candidates because they understand that we need strong schools in our community. They will fight for fairer education funding that lowers the burden on homeowners and invests directly in our children's future.

State Reps:

Chris Calhoun

Judi Lanza

Marie Morgan

Karyn Battey

Chris Conroy

Bob Jones

I’m hoping you’ll support them, too. Please vote on November 3.

Example message 2

Hi Don,

Hope you’re doing well! Like so many families, I've seen firsthand how tough it is to get the healthcare we need at a price we can afford. When I had a hard diagnosis a few years back, my first thought wasn't my health, but the crushing worry of medical bills bankrupting my family.

That’s why I’m voting for these local candidates—because they're committed to lowering the skyrocketing cost of prescriptions, protecting coverage for pre-existing conditions, and ensuring mental health services are affordable and easy to access for every single one of us.

Example message 3

Hi Elisabeth,

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty much drowning in property taxes these days. We’ve lived here a long time, but it’s getting harder and harder to stay, especially for a senior on a fixed income.

I’m voting for this group of local candidates because I believe they will fight for a real solution—not just point fingers.

Pulling it all together

Make a list of local friends and family members you can contact, then feel free to use the examples above to inform your own calls, texts and emails. A little adjustment can make them work for just about anyone.

And make sure to contact each person more than once! It typically takes multiple touches to affect someone’s behavior.

Make your calls/texts/emails:

  • Today

  • Closer to the November election

  • Any time an issue you care about becomes relevant

Let us know how it goes!
